Welcome to Year 2 frown

Summer 1 

 

 In English we will be reading ‘Cool Food’ an information book linked to our Science work and writing our own booklets about food based on this. We will be reading some non-fiction linked to our History work and be writing reports linked to this. We will also be reading some poetry and writing our own poetry using the poems read as a stimulus for our own ideas.

 

In Maths we will be exploring numbers and the number system further. We will be revisiting calculation strategies and applying these to solve problems in real life contexts. We will also be developing our understanding of fractions and exploring shape and space further.

 

In History we will be finding out what life was like in Manchester about 100 years ago. We will find out about the life of LS Lowry and use his artwork to help us explore what Manchester used to look like. We will using different sources of evidence to research answers to questions to help understand how life was different then to our lives today.

 

Our  Science topic this half term is Health and Growth. We will be learning about the different food groups and the importance of healthy eating & exercise. We will be planning healthy balanced meals and thinking about the foods we eat. We will also be thinking about changes from baby to adult.

 

In Computing we will be using the internet safely to research topics linked to our work in other curriculum areas.

 

In DT we will be designing and making a healthy sandwich linked to our Science work.

 

In Art we will be exploring the work of LS Lowry. As part of this we will be visiting the Lowry gallery to take part in a workshop. We will be creating our won artwork in his style.

 

This half term in RE we will be exploring the question 'how can we care for others?' We will be exploring stories from different religions and thinking about what they teach us about the way we should treat others.

 

This half term PE will be Net and Wall games including short tennis on Tuesdays and Athletics on a Thursday. The children will need  suitable footwear for our outdoor sessions (trainers or pumps) and may wish to wear a plain blue/black tracksuit until the weather is warmer. They will need school issue shorts and a t-shirt for our indoor sessions.

 

Homework is given out on a Friday and is due in by the following Wednesday. Spelling tests will take place each Friday.
