In English this term we will continue to build on our knowledge of various spelling patterns. We will develop our understanding and use of pronouns as well as consolidating our knowledge and identification of the different parts of speech and sentence structure. We will read play scripts, identify their features and then write and perform our own. We will also produce writing linked to our Science topic, Habitats, such as a factual report and poetry.

This half term our targets will be:

  • To identify and label accurately the different parts of speech
  • To choose nouns or pronouns appropriately for clarity and cohesion
  • To listen to and discuss a wide range of fiction, poetry (recognising some different forms of poetry) plays, non-fiction and reference books or textbooks
  • To write play scripts and poetry in response to different stimuli

In Maths this term we will be learning how to calculate the perimeter and area of shapes. We will compare and order angles of different sizes, classify shapes based on their properties, and look for lines of symmetry. Lastly, we will learn how to plot coordinates and describe the translation of shapes on a grid.

This half term our targets will be:

  • Measure length and perimeter
  • Convert between different units of measurement
  • Calculate the area of a rectangle

This term our Science theme is ‘Habitats and Living Things’. The children will learn that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways, explore and use classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in the local and wider environment. They will recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things.

Our Computing topics will be ‘Effective Searching’ and ‘Hardware Investigators’. We will be finding out how to use internet search engines to find information that we need. We will also be learning about the parts of a computer.

In History we will be studying ‘Ancient Egyptians’. We will be locating Egypt and investigating the significance of the Nile to the Ancient Egypt. We will also investigate Tutankhamen, the pyramids and what we can learn from artefacts.

Our topic in Design Technology is ‘Levers and Linkages’ and we will create moving pictures. We will also be making healthy pizzas, to finish off last term’s Healthy Living topic.

This half term in PE, we will be doing two outdoor sessions per week; tennis and orienteering. These will be on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Working with Mrs Cooper in Music, we will be exploring descriptive sounds. We will also be learning songs in preparation for the summer concert.

In R.E. we will continue learning about ‘Following a Christian Way of Life’ with Mrs Duarte. The children will continue to focus on how Christians lead their life and how they worship Jesus.

The theme for PSHE this half term is ‘Changes’. In SRE week we will look at keeping safe, making right choices, body changes, gender differences and labelling of body parts.

In French, we will spend this half term revising and practising the language that we have learned in Year 4.

General Information

Homework, usually Maths, English and any spelling and multiplication tables will be given out on a Friday to be handed in by the following Wednesday. Please read with your child regularly and record this in their reading record as it is part of their weekly homework. Times tables tests take place every Thursday and spelling tests will be every Thursday.

P.E. lessons will be Wednesdays and Fridays. An outdoor kit is needed for both lessons. Please ensure that your child has something suitable for all weathers. Children who have earrings are asked to remove them and leave them at home on P.E. days or remove them and keep them safe themselves at school. If ears have been pierced recently the children are responsible covering their own earrings with tape.

Please can you also ensure your child has the correct equipment required for school. Your child will need a blue fibre tip pen with spares, pencil, sharpener, ruler and eraser. They also require a named water bottle.
