Year 2

Welcome to Year 2!

Your teacher is Mrs Bell and your teaching assistants are Mrs Hughes and Mrs Cookson.

Year 2 as rockstars!

Spring 1

In English we will be reading the story ‘A Dairy of a Killer Cat’ by Ann Fine and writing descriptions and our own diary entries linked to this. We will also read some non-fiction texts linked to our topic work and write a recount of our trip to Staircase House. We will be checking our work carefully for sense and accuracy and using subordinating conjunctions in sentences.

In Maths we will complete our work on comparing lengths and solving word problems involving length. We will explore how to measure and compare mass in grams and kilograms. We will learn to solve word problems using bar modelling diagrams, to read temperature and interpret picture graphs.

Our Science topic this half term is 'uses of everyday materials'. We will be identifying and describing the properties of materials and their uses. We will learn about natural and man-made materials and investigate why different objects are made out of certain materials.

In our History topic, will be finding out about the Great Fire of London. We will learn about how it started and why it spread easily. We will be finding out how London changed after the fire and looking at different sources of evidence. We will be going on a trip linked to this to Staircase House.

During our Computing lessons, we will be learning about how to search effectively on the internet and how to stay safe online. We will develop our understanding of digital footprints and how to use email safely.

In our Design & Technology lessons we will explore existing mechanisms in a range of toys that move. We will also explore and use wheels, axles and axle holders in Knex. The children will plan, design, make and evaluate their own moving vehicle.

In R.E. this half term we will be finding out ‘Who is a Muslim and what do they believe?’ We will be listening to some stories about the Prophet Muhammad and exploring what a mosque is like.

Mrs Grice will teach P.S.H.E. on a Friday afternoon with a focus this half term on how to achieve our goals and dealing with frustration.

Homework, usually English, Maths and spellings will be given out on a Friday to be handed in by the following Wednesday. Please read with your child regularly and record this in their reading record, it is part of their weekly homework. Spellings will be tested every Friday.

PE sessions will be target skills outdoors on Tuesday afternoons and dance indoors on Wednesday afternoons; a suitable kit is needed for these lessons. If children have their ears pierced, it would be preferable if they could leave their earrings at home on P.E. days. If not, they must be able to remove their earrings themselves and are responsible for putting them somewhere safe.
