Spring 2

In English we will be reading ‘Flat Stanley’ over a number of weeks and writing our own stories and character descriptions based on this. We will be reading ‘Never Tickle a Tiger’ and writing letters linked to this. We will also be reading some non-fiction linked to the life cycles of plants and writing non-chronological reports linked to this. We will be learning to spell words with different suffixes and how to spell plural nouns. 

In Maths we will be exploring fractions including halves, quarters and thirds. We will be learning how to calculate fractions of amounts. We will also be learning about the names and properties of common 2D and 3D shapes. We will learn how to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes.

Our Science topic this half term is 'Plants'. We will be investigating what plants need to grow and be healthy. We will be naming the parts of a plant. We will be growing our own seeds and observing how they change over time. We will also be finding out about the different flowers and trees that are growing in our local environment.

In our Geography topic, we will be finding out about the contrasting locality of Africa. We will find out what life is like in a traditional Ugandan village and compare this to our lives in the UK. We will be exploring maps to find out what countries make up the continent of Africa as well as finding out about the weather and landscape of African countries.

During our Computing lessons this half term, we will be using a program called Scratch to amend a program and explore what happens. We will also be learning to code by writing algorithms in ‘One Hour of Code.’   

In our Art lessons we will explore and draw different African patterns and create our own African style patterns using different printing techniques.

In R.E. this half term we will be finding out ‘Who is a Muslim and what do they believe?’ We will be learn about what happens at a mosque and about the celebration of Eid. Later in the half term, we will explore the Easter story and find out how Easter is celebrated. 

Mrs Grice will teach P.S.H.E. on a Friday afternoon with a focus this half term on 'Good to be me'.

Homework, usually English, Maths and spellings will be given out on a Friday to be handed in by the following Wednesday. Please read with your child regularly and record this in their reading record, it is part of their weekly homework. Spellings will be tested every Friday.

PE sessions will be multi-skills outdoors on Wednesday afternoons and dance indoors on Thursday afternoons; a suitable kit is needed for these lessons. If children have their ears pierced, it would be preferable if they could leave their earrings at home on P.E. days. If not, they must be able to remove their earrings themselves and are responsible for putting them somewhere safe.
