Reception

Welcome to Reception smiley

Your class teacher is Mrs. Parsons and your teaching assistant is Mrs. Kays

General Information:

  • Everyday in school your child will need their book bag and a named water bottle. Wellies will also be required from October. These boots will be stored under the veranda, ready for any puddles and damp grass! Please do not forget to name them-we often get duplicate pairs.
  • The children have lot of exercise outside but we will also use the hall when appropriate. For this half term (Autumn One), your child will need to remove their shoes, socks or tights. The focus this half term will be building strength to support handwriting.
  • Snacks of fruit and vegetables are provided. Alternatively, you can send in a (named) snack. Please note we are Healthy School- no nuts or products containing nuts/ chocolate e.g. Nutella
  • School lunches are free. The school kitchen team provide excellent meals for all Reception children. Alternatively, you can send in a packed lunch.
  • Homework: This completed in an exercise book called a 'Busy Bee' book. It is handed out every FRIDAY. Please return it every WEDNESDAY to enable completed work to be marked and new work to be assigned.

Reading

Initially, your child will have (lilac) picture books, together with a library book. Your child will quickly progress to books which closely align to the school's phonic teaching so that they can read the book themselves. Other books will be sent home to support your child's reading experience.

Parents and carers will be invited into school this half term to attend reading themed events. Staff hold a Reading Meeting to explain the school's reading scheme. A second event will take place in the Reception's classroom. You will experience a phonics lesson (appropriate to this stage of the academic year). During this event, you will have have the opportunity to share books with your child (ren) in their classroom. Parents will receive a letter with further details.

Starting Reception/ Baseline Assessment

To promote successful learning, staff will be:

  • Building relationships with each child and their family
  • Getting to know every child. Each child is unique. We want to know your child's individual interests and needs
  • Ensuring every child is happy, settled and familiar with the school's routines and expectations

We will be promptly beginning Well Green's school baseline, together with the Government Statutory Reception Baseline (RBA) that all Reception children are required to complete. The RBA is an activity based assessment of each child's academic starting points in:

  • language, communication and literacy
  • mathematics

Please access the RBA Government website for further information. Schools have six weeks to complete the RBA.

How is your child settling into school?

During the term you will receive a written report and an opportunity to speak with myself (parents' evening chat). The school office organise an electronic appointment system for Parents' Evening. You will receive information about this nearer the time.

In the meantime, if you have any concerns or queries and need to speak to a member of staff for more than a few moments, feel free to make an informal appointment. Please do this via my email, passing a handwritten note to staff or having a quick chat at the gate. My email is:  wparsons@wellgreenprimary.gov.uk

The Reception Team look forward to working with you this academic year. There are lots of exciting activities planned! Thank you in advance for your kind support, Mrs. Parsons and Mrs. Kays
