Year 3

Welcome to Year 3 smiley

Teacher: Miss Shaw

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Grice

Summer 1

In English we will be reading ‘The Lost Happy Endings' and producing various pieces of writing linked to this. In particular, we will be focussing on expanding sentences by adding interesting adjectives and adverbs as well as extra details. We will be exploring different language features and practising extending sentences using a variety of conjunctions.

In Maths, we will be exploring time starting by revising 5-minute times, before moving on to one-minute times. We will then be finding durations of time as well as start and finish times. We will also explore days and months then finish by solving time word problems.

This half term in Science we will start with Physics by exploring:

  • How shadows are formed
  • Opaque and transparent materials, and how this links to shadows
  • Electrical conductors and insulators
  • the moon's movement relative to the sun

We will then move on to Biology and explore:

  • The life cycle of flowering plants
  • Seed dispersal

In History we will find out about how the discovery of metal changed life during the Bronze Age. We will learn about burials and trade during this time.

In RE we will be learning about Hinduism. We will learn about their main beliefs and values. We will find out Hindu gods and goddesses. We will also find out how Hindus worship at home and in the temple by visiting the Gita Bhavan temple.

In Art we will create sunflower collages.

In Music the children will learn to play the ukulele this term.

Homework, usually English, Maths and any spellings/multiplication tables will be given out on a Friday to be handed in by the following Wednesday. Please read with your child regularly and record this in their reading record, it is part of their weekly homework. (Times tables/spelling test every Friday).

Both of our PE sessions will be outdoors (weather permitting) so a suitable kit is required: shorts and t-shirt or a blue/black tracksuit and trainers will be needed for each lesson.

Please can you also ensure your child has the correct equipment required for school: a pencil, ruler, rubber and a blue fibre-tipped pen. They also require a named water bottle.

Thank you for your continued support
