Welcome to Year 2!
Your teacher is Mrs Bell and your teaching assistant is Ms Denney
Summer 2
In English this half term we will be reading the story ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark.’ We will also read the stories ‘Lizzie and the Birds’ and ‘The Bog Baby’ which link to our Science work on habitats. We will write setting and character descriptions, persuasive texts, instructions and our own stories. We will be practising adding detail and description to our writing as well as checking our work for errors.
In Maths we will be exploring money further including finding totals and giving change. We will be consolidating our calculation methods and using all four operations to solve real life word problems. We will also be exploring fractions further and consolidating telling the time to the nearest 5 minute on analogue and digital clocks.
In Science this half term we will be finding out about living things in their environment and classifying living things according to their characteristics. We will also be exploring how animals are suited to different habitats and investigating food chains.
In our Geography topic this half term we will continue learning about the seaside town of Southport. We will be visiting Southport to carry out a local area study. We will be finding out more about why people visit there and comparing and contrasting it to our locality.
During our Computing lessons this half term, the children will use branching databases to answer questions and will create their own branching databases. They will be also carry out research linked to other subject areas.
In our Art lessons we will be making clay models of owls linked to our class book ‘The owl who was afraid of the dark’ and creating backgrounds using collage.
In R.E. this half term we will be continuing with our theme from last half term and thinking about what we can learn from different religions about how to treat others. We will research and find out about Mother Teresa and Doctor Bernardo who cared for others.
Mrs Grice will teach P.S.H.E. on a Friday afternoon with a focus this half term on exploring relationships and preparing for KS2.
Homework, usually English, Maths and spellings will be given out on a Friday to be handed in by the following Wednesday. Please read with your child regularly and record this in their reading record, it is part of their weekly homework. Spellings will be tested every Friday.
PE sessions will be net and wall skills outdoors on Tuesday afternoons and athletics outdoors on Wednesday afternoons; a suitable kit is needed for these lessons. If children have their ears pierced, it would be preferable if they could leave their earrings at home on P.E. days. If not, they must be able to remove their earrings themselves and are responsible for putting them somewhere safe.
