Welcome to Year 3
Your teacher is Miss Shaw and your Teaching Assistant is Mrs Grice. Mrs Oldham will also teach you on Friday mornings.
Autumn 2
In English, we will look at fables and twisted fairy tales. We will write our own fables and alternative fairy tales thinking about different characters’ perspectives. We will learn to use a variety of conjunctions to extend sentences and use apostrophes to spell contracted forms or words.
In Maths, we will explore multiplication and division. We will practice the multiplication facts for the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, along with the corresponding division facts. We will learn how to multiply and divide 2-digit numbers, and solve multiplication and division word problems.
This half term, in Science, we will starting with Biology by exploring:

In our computing lessons, we are going to learn about coding and algorithms. We will develop our programming skills using Scratch to create short animations by translating a storyboard into a program.
Our History topic is The Ancient Egyptians. We will find out what daily life was like at this time. We will learn about Egyptian rulers, how and why the pyramids were built and how bodies were prepared for burials. We will explore Egyptian artefacts and some of their most important inventions.
In our Geography topic, we will study the United Kingdom. We will map countries, counties, rivers, cities and topographic features. We will find out about places of interest in the UK and different coastal features. We will also look at the distribution of resources in the United Kingdom.
In DT, we are going to design and make a purse/wallet. We will learn how to thread a needle and some simple stitching techniques.
In R.E. this half term, we will continue to explore the key question: ‘What do different people believe about God?’ We will learn about the Hindu belief in many gods and goddesses and about humanist beliefs. We will then explore the theme of light, thinking about the symbol of light in Christianity, describing our own feelings about light and understanding the significance of the Christingle.
Homework, usually English, Maths and any spellings/multiplication tables will be given out on a Friday to be handed in by the following Wednesday. Please read with your child regularly and record this in their reading record, it is part of their weekly homework. (Times tables/spelling test every Friday).
Swimming will be continue on Tuesday afternoons. A suitable kit is needed for these lessons – a one-piece costume for girls and tight fitting shorts for boys (no baggy clothing is permitted). The children must not wear any form of jewellery to school on swimming days.
Please can you ensure your child has the correct equipment required for school: a pencil, ruler, rubber and a blue fibre-tipped pen (when they have received their pen license). It is also useful to have some pencil crayons and a glue stick. They also require a named water bottle.
