Netball Report 2012/2013

Well, what an incredible year it has been …
We began the Netball season in September with many keen, enthusiastic Year 5 and Year 6 members, ready and eager to approach the new year with the same grit and determination as witnessed during last year’s season.

Our first match was against Bowdon Church and, in a tightly fought contest, in our only loss of the season, although we showed strength and positivity, we lost 12 – 2. Bowdon Church went on to win the league this season.

Then we played Altrincham CofE, and stormed to a victory of 13-0. In late November, we played our most closely fought match against Heyes Lane, with the final result of 6-6 being crucial in the final places in the league.

Victories against St Hugh’s (21 – 0), Bowdon Prep (10 – 4), Stamford Park (17 – 0) and St Vincent’s (13 – 0) further demonstrated the skills, confidence and incredible team work of Well Green’s netball team.

With the final match of the season approaching, we all understood the importance of the final result of the final match of the league – a win would mean we would come joint second on points with Heyes Lane, and it would be down to goal difference to make the final decision between second and third places. The netball team were outstanding, and even though, during the only outdoor match of the league, as the temperature hovered around freezing, snow fell and the players couldn’t feel their fingers(!), they fought to the very end against Hale Prep, winning 6-4. It was an extremely proud moment for all of us.

Having gone from strength to strength, they have impressed all of us who have been able to watch them develop. The cheering squad of parents, grandparents and siblings have also helped enormously, shouting words of encouragement and support throughout the season.
As runners-up in the Altrincham League, we then progressed into the Trafford Champions League, which took place on Tuesday 7th May. We played matches against the winners and runners-up of other local leagues, the winners of which went through to the semi-finals. Having won our heat, we then played Brooklands in a tough semi-final, and won 5-1.

The final was spectacular! We played Bowdon Church (the winner of our local league – and our local rivals! J) and, in an incredibly quick, very closely-fought match, the winning goal was scored in the final minute, and we were named Trafford champions, with a win of 6-5. We will now go on to represent Trafford in the Greater Manchester tournament which will take place on 9th July. We will be keeping our fingers crossed for further success.

I am again exceedingly proud of all our players and look forwards to next year, where we are all ready and prepared to take on the challenge of the Altrincham Netball League again.
