Letters to Parents - Summer 1

Well Green Primary School

 
This half term (Summer 1), Year Four will be learning about the following topics:

English

We will be covering a range of grammar work, including subordinate clauses. Further punctuation work focusing on apostrophes for possession and different spelling strategies for plurals. The children will also create big writing work, including instructional texts, using a range of imperative verbs. We will write persuasive texts about not smoking and information texts about staying healthy.
Maths The children will be solving real life word problems. We will be developing our calculation work to include all four written operations. The children will be learning about equivalent fractions and rounding numbers. We will be covering place value work and knowledge of larger numbers. The children will develop their counting and number knowledge, using decimals.
Science

We will be learning about keeping healthy, thinking about healthy diets, exercise and the effects on the body. The topic will also include thinking about drugs and medicines and the effects of smoking tobacco. In SRE week we will be learning about male and female body parts and where babies come from.

ICT In our ICT lessons, we will be using PowerPoint for presentation of informative. The children will learn about features, including fonts, using images, linking slides and transitions between them. We will attempt some simple sounds and animations to create a PowerPoint about healthy lifestyles.
Geography In our Geography topic, we will study Europe as a continent. We will use mapping work to locate countries and cities in Europe. The children will learn about the culture and differences and similarities between European countries and choose a country of their choice for a more in-depth study.
P.E. Tennis skills.
Dance – Theme Electricity.
Music The children will be developing their knowledge of composition and sound colours with Mrs Cooper.
R.E.  This half term, the children will be considering ‘What it means to follow a Christian way of life.’ They will be learning about how Christians worship, the way they follow Jesus and examples of Christians, including Mother Teresa.
P.S.H.E. & Citizenship Changes, considering the positive aspects of change. We will also be covering other aspects of change during our SRE week, as well as differences between male & female including body parts.
 
 
Homework, usually Literacy, Numeracy and any spelling/multiplication tables will be given out on a Friday to be handed in by the following Wednesday. Please read with your child regularly and record this in their reading record, it is part of their weekly homework. (Times tables/spelling test every Friday).
 
The outdoor games sessions will be on Wednesdays and Friday. A suitable outdoor and indoor kit is needed for these lessons. It the weather is hot the children may need a hat.
Please can you also ensure your child has the correct equipment required for school: A blue cartridge pen with spare refills, pencil, ruler and eraser. They also require a named water bottle.
